waves roll and break
in rhythmic syncopation
over colonies of stone.
Pulling back to the sea,
a burbling song rises as
water rolls each stone over
tumbling one against another.
Some stone melodies giggle,
others mournfully moan out
an audible pulsing rising falling
response to the magnetic flow.
Eons of tidal cadence smoothing
rocks to perfect round or oval,
some goose egg huge,
others petite pebbles.
Keeping company
with others the same size,
their polished surfaces clink,
crying out a burnished ballad.
I silence them inside my pocket
where they lie immobile,
as cherished memories.
I have plans for each one.
I too cry out when rolled
by life’s waves, rough edges worn off,
smoothed in preparation,
rough corners buffed to a gloss.
Waiting for the day
I’m picked up and pocketed,
held fast in by a steadfast hand
when I will celebrate by singing a new song.
