(Thoughts from Peter’s epistles and Luke 22:51)
See the elderly apostle
Lay aside his scroll and pen,
Pause in prayerful contemplation
As he reads his words again:
To the saints, so widely scattered,
By this world misunderstood,
Chosen by God’s great foreknowledge,
Sprinkled by Christ’s precious blood,
Though you suffer grief and trial
Even in life’s darkest hour,
Still rejoice in faith relying
That you’re shielded by God’s power.
Don’t be tempted, dearest children,
To wander from His mighty Word,
To try to fight alone the battle,
To wield an artificial sword.
I too, once full of zeal and anger,
Fervent ardour, strong and brave,
Sought to fight alone the battle,
Sought myself, my Lord to save.
O the gentle touch of Jesus
Restoring what I’d made amiss
Kindly stepping forth with halting
Words that said ‘No more of this’.
O His understanding manner
Checking my impetuous deed;
Knew that zeal , wrongly directed,
Profits nought, but does impede.
O the healing restoration
From His powerful loving hand
Bringing order back from chaos
Saying ‘Trust, I understand.’
So dear children, grow in goodness,
Walk humbly with your Risen Lord,
Follow closely His directing,
Let His Word be your only sword.
