“Look at those eyes,” my full-grown man spoke in silly baby tones. “Oh yes, your eyes will get me for sure.”
Slightly embarrassed, Luke looked at me with the biggest smile I’ve seen in…well, I don’t know how long. I love how his gorgeous blue eyes sparkle when he’s excited about something. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that gleam. Maybe a puppy in the house would bring some joy.
I squatted next to the brown-eyed basset nibbling on my shoestring, rubbed her pink tummy, and gently reminded Luke that she will be his dog. He seemed fully aware of this agreement.
“She really is adorable,” I conceded.
Of course I’m adorable. Here, let me roll over and you can feel my warm tummy. See my freckles? Where did that shoestring go? Oh boy, oh boy. I love shoes and yours smell especially wonderful.
Luke fell in love with the pup right away and it became obvious to Abby who she belonged to; Luke, the twenty-four-seven caregiver.
She absorbed his full attention and he stayed calm as a cucumber when he had to clean up piddle-puddles or poop-piles. Well, for the most part.
“Do you even slow down to digest your food, Abby?” He looked at me frustrated. “She just ate thirty seconds ago and already pooped in the kitchen.” Luke’s hands on his hips carried an exasperated, motherly appearance.
I winced at the thought of puppy presents in the midst of where I prepare food but chose to remain silent.
“Look at this, Abby. You have to hold it until I take you outside.” Luke is a reasonable man but reasoning with a puppy is a different story.
Eww, what are you doing? Oh, wait…it smells familiar. *sniff-sniff*
“Come on, Girl, let’s go outside.” Luke grabbed the leash and stepped into his slippers.
Outside? Oh boy. I love you. You’re my man. My man loves me.
After several days, man and dog developed routines and bonded rather well. I smiled at the twosome lounged in the recliner; Abby’s droopy bloodshot eyes half open, Luke stroking her back. They even snored in unison.
“Two of a kind,” I ran my fingers through Luke’s hair and bent over to kiss him on the cheek. Abby perked up and tried to squeeze her nose between us.
“I think she’s jealous,” Luke laughed. “Are you jealous?” He used his puppy-talk voice. “She’s my woman, you’re my dog. She comes first. Got that?”
*Slurp*. I love it when you talk to me like that. *Pant-pant*.
“Should I be concerned that there’s another female in your life?” I teased Luke while he prepared to take Abby outside.
Luke kissed me and patted my backside. I returned the affection in a similar manner and giggled. The interaction between us did not go unnoticed by the pup.
The evening progressed, as did our flirtatious mood...and so did Abby’s interference. We cuddled on the couch and watched a movie. Abby clearly placed herself between us. Luke put his hand on my leg and Abby shoved her nose under his hand, giving me her brown-eyed innocent look. I scooted closer to Luke and Abby weaseled her way in; her head in his lap, her rear in mine.
“I see how it is,” I teased. Her tail thumped my lap. Hard.
At bedtime Luke quickly snuggled in close.
“I’m your woman, hmm?”
We whispered, kissed, and giggled much to Abby’s annoyance. Abby left her large pillow in the corner of our room and attempted to get her stubby-legged basset-body to jump onto our bed.
“I don’t think so, Abby. Go lay down.” I instructed from my side of the King-sized pillow-top paradise. “No dogs allowed up here. That rule won’t change.”
*Whimper-whimper*. Why is she talking to me? She isn’t my master.
Luke snuggled in but Abby persisted. “Abby,” Luke snapped his fingers. “Go lay down.”
*Owwrrr-woof* I know you don’t mean it. *Owwrr-woof* Pet me. Love me. *pant-pant*.
“Abby!” Luke raised his voice at the pup’s persistent jumping.
Finally, Luke threw the covers off and stomped across the room. He pointed to the dog bed and commanded; “Abby, come lay down.”
Abby’s head drooped and she sauntered towards Luke.
“Lay down,” Luke insisted.
Her floppy ears hung to the floor. She swung her head around and gave me the sad puppy-eyes and plopped with clumsy heavy effort.
*Owwrr-hmph*. Just wait until I find her shoes tomorrow.
