The earth is winter sleeping.
You’ll frighten timid pansies that
Above the snow are peeping.
The squirrels, tiptoeing all around,
Are searching here and there.
They hid some nuts last autumn
But can’t remember where.
Some bears and bats and skunks and snakes
Hide out in hibernation.
With bitter cold, that seems to be
An excellent vacation.
Wee mice and moles beneath the ground
Are burrowed in their beds
With snow and icy covers as
Their ornamental spreads.
When God Creator will decree
Sweet springtime to arrive,
There’ll be no need of shushing then;
The world will come alive.
The songbirds that in colder climes
Sing muted melodies
Will greet sun’s dawning golden rays
With glorious symphonies.
Soft snowflakes lightly touching down
On frozen bleak terrains
Will be replaced by thunder’s roar
And April’s pounding rains.
The creek just now is frozen that
Meanders through the glen,
But with the sun’s warm thawing, it
Will rush and roar again.
There’ll be no need for silencing
Earth’s joyful sounds of spring,
Replacing winter’s quietness
With nature’s caroling.
