people from all walks of life
to do his work and spread his word
midst poverty, hardships, and strife;
but often their response has been
a shocked and incredulous, “Huh?!
You can’t mean me, Lord, there’s no way,
I’m not the one you want.”
You have to be kidding; did I hear you right, Lord?
You want me to do what?
I couldn’t possibly, wouldn’t dare, absolutely not!
People will laugh, they will ridicule:
“Look at that idiot, what a fool!”
But God is persistent, he doesn’t give up
‘til we say “Amen” instead of “Huh?”
The Lord called Abram and Sarai his wife to
move out of their comfort zone,
and Noah he told to build an arc,
an enormous, floating home;
young David faced the Philistine
who taunted and scorned and jeered;
the prophets spoke words, “Repent and be saved,”
while the Israelites snickered and sneered.
You have to be kidding; did I hear you right, Lord?
You want me to do what?
I couldn’t possibly, wouldn’t dare, absolutely not!
People will laugh, they will ridicule:

But God is persistent, he doesn’t give up
‘til we say “Amen” instead of “Huh?”
Jesus spoke in parables and taught
how to love one another;
the disciples simply scratched their heads
and muttered “Huh?” to each other.
Love your enemies, bless not curse,
give all you have away,
heal, forgive, be humble and kind,
die to self each day.

I couldn’t possibly, wouldn’t dare, absolutely not!

But God is persistent, he doesn’t give up

Now down through the ages God has called
people like you and like me
to do his work and spread his word,
to be his hands and his feet.
The world may laugh, not understand,
give a collective “Huh?”
as I give up my pride and dignity
and become a fool for God.
