The vase placed safely on the shelf
Was often much admired.
It sat supreme, all by itself,
Since first it was acquired.
Untouched and only viewed from far,
The shapely alabaster jar.

Though beautiful in its design
The treasure was within.
The shape, though delicately fine,
Was just the covering.
Encased, enclosed, and sealed from sight
A fragrant perfume of delight.

Because of love, intense and real,
She set the treasure free.
Breaking the all-confining seal
To set at liberty
A fragrance so divinely sweet,
To pour on Jesus’ hands and feet.

Perfume and tears of gratitude
Streamed over her dear Lord.
Extravagance released, imbued,
The all she could afford.
Then she, despite criticism’s stare,
Unclasped, let loose, her long brown hair.

And as she wiped His feet that day
Using her deep brown tresses.
She saw His smile, she heard Him say
‘The love that she confesses
Is treasure from the deepest store
That will be told for evermore.’

Let my life too give off the scent
Of Christ so I might be
A perpetual reminder
Of Him for all to see.
A powerful fragrance to abound
And speak of Christ to all around.

So...
Break my alabaster jar
Let it drop and smash its seal
Let its contents on you pour
All its treasure to reveal.
Take it Lord, my heart, my song,
It’s been closed up for far too long.
