With nature’s beauty everywhere—
Islands, rivers, outback land,
Mountains, forests, desert sand.
But given choice, I would not choose,
At any kind of level,
To have the traits that can be seen
In their Tasmanian Devil.
Consuming carrion would be gross,
And were that not enough,
I wouldn’t want to make a meal
Of other rotten stuff.
I couldn’t stand to spend my days
In dense brush or a hole,
And hunting wallabies at night
Would never be my goal.
To be known for ferocity,
Along with awful smell,
And for emitting raucous sounds
Would bother me as well.
To have large clumps of hair pulled out
By others when we’re fighting,
Then getting scars from such events
Does not seem so exciting.
It would be sad to hear folks say
I’m ugliest of creatures
With big head and a vicious yawn
And no attractive features.
I guess that wouldn’t matter though
To others of my kind.
Since they all look and act like me,
They simply would not mind.
Still devils surely have their place;
I must not be deluded,
For God created everything,
Marsupials included.
