“Mommy,” Gaila began, “When our new brother and sister come, who will you love more?”
Mommy smiled and put her arms around Gaila and Mandi. “I will love all of you the same,” she said.
“But we were here first,” said Gaila, with a bit of a frown.
“Yes, Gaila, you were our first child and you always will be. When God decided to give you to our family, He gave me a whole bucket of love for you. I didn’t have all that love until God gave you to us, but now I will always have that big bucket of love just for you.”
Mommy turned to Mandi. “Then God decided to give you to our family, too, and He gave me another bucket of love. The second bucket is the same size as the first one, but it’s full, full, full of love just for you, Mandi.”
Mommy gave both girls a big kiss on the tops of their heads. “When your new brother and sister come, God will give me more buckets of love just for them.”
“Are the buckets different colours?” Gaila asked.
Mommy laughed. “Oh yes,” she said. “All the buckets are different colours and different shapes. But they all have the same amount of love inside.”
Gaila hugged Mommy’s neck. Mandi stood up on the couch and hugged Mommy, too. Mommy hugged them back.
“Mommy?” Gaila asked, leaning back so she could see Mommy’s face. “Do you get tired carrying around all those big buckets of love?”
Mommy smiled her biggest smile. “No, I don’t get tired. I don’t have to carry the buckets at all.”
“Why not?” Gaila asked.
“Because the buckets carry me!”
