The smoke billows black, and fire licks red
The plough is in pieces, the oxen are dead
I turn my back and I walk away
Walking
Walking
First steps down a path, newly trod today

The cloak of the prophet, warm with his heat
Covers my shoulders and makes me complete
The challenge to follow sounds in my ear
Ringing
Ringing
“Elisha, Elisha draw near!”

My master is leaving, a hurricane’s coming
With wild whipping winds, hissing and humming
“Stay here, Elisha, to Bethel I go.
Leaving
Leaving
Transported to heaven, leaving you here below.”

“I will not leave you, I’ll never depart
So speaks my shaking and shuddering heart
“Together with you I will go all the way
Together
Together
Until comes the chariot that takes you away”

Prophets approach with lips full and spilling
Words that are cold, message that’s chilling
“Do you know that the Lord is coming this day?
Coming
Coming
To bear your master Elijah away?”

We stand by the Jordan, waters frothing and gushing
We stand so still while the river is rushing
Gathering folds he slams the cloak down
Striking
Striking
The water recedes and we cross on dry ground

A final request, he seeks from me
“A double portion, of your spirit,” I plea
A difficult thing, but mine to receive if
Watching
Watching
I see his departure, and witness him leave

A chariot with horses above me flies
Blazing with fire it erupts in the skies
Snatched by a whirlwind, I silently stare as
Lifted
Lifted
Elijah has vanished, he’s no longer there

My own adventure this day begins
The spindle with threads of my story spins
The scenes of my life God plans and conceives
Weaving
Weaving
With careful attention, He lovingly weaves

An infertile land, and a harsh bitter spring
A flurry of salt that heals everything
The chanting of boys reeking with hate
Judgment
Judgment
The claws of a bear – repentance? – too late!

Kings pressed by enemies, God’s answers they need
“What does He say?” they beseech and they plead
The harp sings sweet music, I incline my ear
Listening
Listening
To the promise of victory that’s near

A widow, a debt, that she cannot pay
A threat to steal her children away
A small jug of oil that never runs dry
Pouring
Pouring
“Merciful Father!” her declaration, her cry

A dry barren womb conceives a son
Death swiftly strikes – his life over and done
My faith and my staff placed over the boy
Praying
Praying
He’s brought back to life, precious life to enjoy

A man, white with leprosy, good as dead
By a servant’s word to Jordan he’s led
Baptised in the river, he’s cleansed and made whole
Healing
Healing
Restored is the man, made new in body and soul

Rescuing axe heads, anointing kings
And many more wondrous and glorious things
Each day an adventure, embracing His will
Living
Living
His purpose each day to fulfill
