And now he is two years old, and he delights me every day with a new word, a fresh utterance in his childish lisp. I never tire of watching him; he sits and plays with the little Noah’s ark that Joseph has carved for him, babbling his version of animal noises and occasionally chastising a wayward bear or lion.
This morning, I was preparing bread for the day and listening to Jesus as he prattled with his wooden animals. When he suddenly fell silent, I looked to the corner where he played, and saw that he had that same look again—quiet, serene, with a hint of a smile. He padded over to me on chubby feet and tugged on my garment, looking earnestly into my eyes.
“Music, mama,” he said. “Music.”
I stopped kneading the dough and listened, thinking perhaps that a traveling musician was at our gate, playing his lyre in hopes of receiving a bite of fish or a silver coin. I heard nothing but the ever-present locusts, whose raucous complaints could hardly be called music.
“Mama!” Jesus held up his arms, and who could resist such an invitation? I lifted him to my hip and kissed his dark curls. One kiss was enough—he squirmed to get down and toddled to the window with a grin. “Music, mama!”
There are many things that I do not understand about my little boy, and with every passing day, I feel him slipping out of my arms and into his Father’s world.
What music do you hear, my son, that is hidden from my ears?
And so we proclaim with one voice—
Each creature and each blade of grass,
Each rock and each river—Rejoice!
Allelu, bless Your name, allelu,
Creation is singing for You.
O hear now the animals’ choir:
Vicuna, raccoon, chimpanzee—
We offer our song to the King:
Great elephant, tiniest flea.
Allelu, bless Your name, allelu,
Creation is singing for You.
We sing, too. (You only can hear).
The cedars and lilies, the wheat,
Bamboo, passionflower, and palm:
Hosannas we lay at Your feet.
Allelu, bless Your name, allelu,
Creation is singing for You.
A wee grain of sand, and this stone,
This boulder, this mountain, this star—
Our melody will not be stilled,
We glory in all that You are.
Allelu, bless Your name, allelu,
Creation is singing for You.
Come, waters of earth, raise your song:
Murmuring book, rushing waterfalls, too,
Lake, river and pond, mighty sea,
All join in the great “Allelu!”
Allelu, bless Your name, allelu,
Creation is singing for You.

You captured it well.
I liked this as told from the POV of Mary, who pondered all she observed and heard in her heart. Very well done.
Super Excellent Wonderful Teriffic
I have often wondered about Mary and Jesus when he was a very young child, this piece was so interesting to think about and so beautiful!!
A well-deserved congratulations!
