The Cup was not yet won
The mighty men of Philistine
Were out to have some fun
The little men of Israel
Were shivering with fear
The knocking of their hairy knees
Was loud enough to hear
The pundits backed the big men
With Goliath at their head
The nine foot giant goalie
“The best!” the pundits said!
Wee Israel came out trembling
Before the baying fans
They never thought the football
Could pass Goliath’s hands
Goliath stretched and strutted
He goaded them to play
“Just score a single goal, yer weeds.
And take the cup away!”
But Israel had no striker
No man of magic skill
To get around Goliath
And come in for the kill
The Philistines were vicious
The fouls were swift and hard
The ref was far too frightened
To brandish his red card
Carried off on stretchers
Some Israelites were hurt
As the Philistines stampeded
And dragged them through the dirt
With ninety minutes over
And extra time played out
The game was down to penalties
The outcome in no doubt
A youngster on the subs bench
A fresh and eager boy
Begged to have a shot at goal
Goliath, he’d destroy!
Young David volunteered
To be the first to shoot
As he tied the yellow laces
On a brand new football boot
Goliath flexed his muscles
And glowered at wee Dave
“I’ll see yer dead, yer maggot
And rotting in yer grave!”
“Yer just a pretty poodle
Yer sure no match fer me.
Just run home to yer mammy
Yer pesky little flea!”
Young David wasn’t flustered
He calmly picked his spot
He sent a prayer heavenward
And gave it all he got
The ball sailed high and soaring
And heading for the net
Goliath leapt, the football was
Impossible to get
Ten thousand fans erupted
In loud and glad delight
Goliath? – he was sobbing
A sad pathetic sight
The game was clearly finished
“Man of the Match” announced
A beaming, blushing David
Upon their shoulders bounced
The cup all clean and gleaming
Was placed into his hands
To the echo of the singing
From the blissful, buoyant fans
Don’t think that you’re too little
To take the giants on
Young Dave when just a young ‘un
Against Goliath won!
