I’ve banked a stack of melodies
Since I was just a child.
The special tunes of years gone by
I’ve neatly stored and filed.

At five I learned my ABCs
To my first preschool song,
And to this day I sing the words
So I won’t sort books wrong.

I bopped to Dick Clark’s rock ‘n roll
As Elvis stole the scene
And sang about his “Blue Suede Shoes”
Before I was a teen.

The year may be two thousand, six,
But hum in unison
Of Bobby Vinton’s “Rubber Ball”---
It’s 1961.

I never will forget the day
Way back in ’63---
A red transistor radio
My father gave to me.

I listened to the top ten tunes
And hummed their melodies.
As Chubbie sang “Let’s Twist Again”,
I danced through the 60s.

My English teacher, I adored---
His name was Mr. Lee.
I sang “My Girl” through ’65,
Dreamed his heart beat for me.

In ’68 I left high school,
My crushes were now through.
A college boyfriend sang to me---
“This Guy’s in Love with You.”

Then followed other charming beaus,
Each had a special song.
But still I had not met my mate
‘Til Edward came along.

We said our vows and pledged our love
Some thirty years ago.
The top band of the day back then
Was known as Chicago.

But sadly as the years went by
I found to my dismay
The songs that made the top ten charts
Did not have much to say.

Don’t ask me what was “number one”
In 1992.
I do not know one melody
Or even have a clue.

For now I’m drawn to Gospel hymns
As I’ve grown old and gray
For they alone appease my soul
And give hope for our day.

The melody that has endured
Through 57 years
Is one I’ll sing until I die,
It comforts, soothes my fears.

I sang it as a little child,
And now I sing it more.
It’s “Jesus Loves Me”---This I know
It’s Him that I adore.
