When they came she settled little Bobby next to her chair, sent young Billy to the opposite end of the table and separated Adrian and his sister. Once they were seated she greeted them, waiting for their concerted response before opening her Bible.
“Who remembers what we are going to talk about today?”
Adrian responded, “You said you would tell us about the beginning of everything, Miss Annie.”
“That’s right.” Annie opened her Bible to the first chapter of Genesis. “What do you think it was like at the beginning?”
Seven little faces turned to her in confusion. Billy ventured, “Does anybody know?”
Annie nodded. “Yes, God knows because He was there. The Bible is His way of telling us. The Bible tells us: ‘In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.’ But verse two says that the earth had no shape and everything was dark. Look at your top card. What is it like?”
The top card of each little pile was black. In white Annie had printed on the top, ‘The beginning.’ The children fingered the cards with little murmurs of “Just black.”
“Right. Now I want you to close your eyes and put your hands over them to make sure you can’t peep. What can you see?”
Seven little faces turned toward her with hands held firmly over closed eyes. “Nothing.”
“That is what it was like in the beginning. Now turn your top card over. What does the next card say?”
“Day 1.” This was not difficult reading even for seven and eight year olds.
“On day 1, God said ‘Let there be light,’ and the Bible says that God divided the light from the darkness. Colour half of that card dark.”
While they coloured their cards Annie asked, “Where did the light come from?”
Young Billie replied, “Light comes from the sun. Everybody knows that!”
“I want you all to remember what Billie just said. Let’s go to day 2.”
Card by card Annie moved her class through the sequences of creation, allowing the children time to make simple sketches to illustrate the activity of each day.
“Now we come to day 4. On this day God said, ‘Let there be lights in the heaven to divide the day from the night.’ God made two great lights, the sun to shine during the day and the moon to shine at night. He also made the stars. Right? Divide your page; draw the sun for the daytime and the moon and stars for the night time. Now, Billy, if God only made the sun and the moon on the fourth day, where did light come from at first?”
Billy shook his head and scratched his ear. “I don’t know, Miss Annie.”
“Light comes from God, Billy. Do you remember when we talked about the Temple in heaven, where God is and Jesus sits next to Him?”
Billy nodded, the other children waited, watching Annie closely.
“There was no sun and no moon, was there?”
Seven little heads shook. “That’s because God is light. Okay?” There were seven little nods.
On day five God created the fish and the birds of the air; and on day six He called forth the animals of the land. Also on day six He created man, using His hands to fashion man from clay made from the earth. Annie passed to each child a small block of play-clay.
“I want you to make a man from this play dough. Work it first to make it soft, and then start.”
While they worked she filled in the story of the creation of Adam and Eve, and of God’s gift to them of all the earth and the animals. “And it says when God had finished making everything He looked at it and saw that it was good. Now, what do you think God did on Day seven?”
Fourteen rounded eyes questioned her.
“On the seventh day, God rested. What do you do when you rest?”
They slept, played quietly, lay down or read books.
“What do you think God did when He rested?”
Annie smiled at the shaking heads. “Perhaps next week we’ll start finding out what God does while He rests.”
