I am not what you would call a particular housekeeper. Casual would probably better describe my housekeeping personality. I have long admired women who adhere to detailed cleaning schedules and who regularly block out several weeks a year dedicated to deep cleaning. My motto concerning dirt is, “If you don’t see it, for goodness sake, don’t disturb it!” For the most part, a daily swipe of the visible dust and grime satisfies me and my family, but once in a great while I get a hankering to go after that hidden dirt. And since my deep cleaning moods are so few and far between, they usually result in some interesting discoveries.
That’s why I was so surprised at what I found the last time I decided to clean under the couch. I pushed the couch away from the wall and was startled to find—dust.
Just dust. No marbles, no renegade caroms, no Lego’s. I didn’t find any crumpled, half finished math sheets, no over due library books. No pencils crayons or stray socks. No miniature cars or dusty pacifiers. A neglected Battleship game stood against the wall, a forgotten state quarter collection by its side. As I swept up the dust I remembered the day when little boys shouted for joy at finding a long lost bouncy ball.
It is time for the grandchildren to come visiting!
