Her friend said, “Our baby is home. She is so much improved. She will live! Thank you for what you did.”
But Dora had done so little. Just a request brought in prayer before the Lord; a word of comfort given with a hug.
But the Lord – oh, how precious is the Lord to those with a need; to those with a bleeding heart; to those with a troubled mind! The Lord is the One who answers our prayers, who dispenses the balm of Gilead; who heals the hurts of mind and body; who lights the fire of the spirit within us.
How we long to be in the position of the woman who only ‘touched the hem of His garment and straightway she was made whole.’ Just to be able to touch the hem of His garment!
Jesus had a word for her. He said, “Your faith has made you whole.” Her faith brought her to the place where she could stoop and touch the hem of His garment. Is there somehow that our faith can bring us to that same place?
Dora pondered Jesus’ words, thought of the faith that brought the healing. What gives success to faith? Is it in the stooping? Is it in the touching? She came to the conclusion that these are only expressions of faith. Without Jesus Christ, who is the focus of faith, the stooping and the touching are nothing. The faith that brings healing today, just as that of the Bible times, is the faith that is rooted and grounded in the person and power of Jesus Christ.
She tasted again the sweet taste of praise: the praise she offered to the Lord who is the Healer. She experienced again the heady fragrance of triumph: the triumph of the power of the Lord of Lords denying victory to death, stealer of life.
“Oh, touch the hem of His garment, and thou, too, shalt be free;
His saving power this very hour shall give new life to thee.” (Geo. F. Root)
