To convert you,
So I laid out candies
In a line that led
Straight to the altar,
But you tasted one
And turned away,
Scorning my attempts
At bribery.
I waxed my eloquence
And left it out to shine,
Hoping to impress you
With big words
And flawless logic,
But you saw past
Every whitewashed wall,
And disdained the show.
Desperate,
I pillaged my stockpile
Of weaponry.
Finally, I made an impression:
The missiles of judgment
And damnation
Broke you,
Shattering a fragile heart
And casting razor-sharp shards
Throughout your life.
But the condemnation
Of the church
Cannot persuade a wounded soul
That there is power
In a Father’s love.
’Cause it was never my job
To persuade you,
After all—
I could never be the one
Who saves you;
No blood of mine
Could cleanse your soul.
’Tis only when I come alongside
And help you piece together
Your shattered heart,
That you finally get a glimpse
Of heaven.
