A weighted bindle
Yoked
Over
Burdened shoulders;
Its shadow
A bobbing bruise
Upon
Wearied backs.
Tiny bag
Troubling
Man’s onward gait.
Eyes cast
Backward -
Thoughts following -
Traveler stumbling
On promised paths
Yet trod.
Souls wearied
By crab-like
Crawls -
Spirits torn
By scrabbling
Claws
Inching sideways.
Memory,
An ocean
Savored with
Salty air and
Seducing Sirens.
A mountebank
With white shadows
And glinting light
That flit and dart
Over her
Crushing waves.
Old Lang Syne
An enigma
Clothed in
Shimmering,
Silken skins.
A cold dagger
Of
Death
Hidden in its
Folds.
Yesterday,
An echo -
Sounds
Rebounding
Off voiceless
Shoals.
Days gone by,
A bijou -
Effigies
Flickering
Over empty
Screens.
Echoes and bijous –
Sounds and effigies
Each a conceit of no substance.
Years past,
Naught but
Shadows of trees
Standing before us.
Furtive backward looks,
Hindered by time
and tangible substance.
Laden pilgrim
Unable to
See beyond the
Light cast upon
A ground.
A ground existent only to
Welcome and bury
The wayfarer
In its hardened soil.
Hope only seen
By forward turn of head -
Upwards -
Into the True Light
Through the boughs.
A future only found
By forgetfulness
And, letting go.
