The sweet sound of her newborn’s first response to sudden life
The gentle comfort of her husband’s happy voice
And collective gushes of amazing grandparental pride.
That first night, nearly every loud or low wakes her from the desperate need for that elusive sleep (She notes all the pings and tingles).
The big door squeaks, nurses drop in, monitors beep, and no one stops to think
A buffer of Obstetric floors drives a whirring cleaner down the hall and back
Seemingly unmindful of new mothers so close by and spent
She figures it’s some bizarre attempt to outshine himself, or his predecessor(She listens for the finish).
A few more times she’s thrilled by her babies new, with first-time coo
The nest gets full, the years roar by, but one sound she does not heed
When satisfaction’s hum turns to screeching halt she can’t avoid
The message of a slamming door; his footsteps as they fade away (The noise she makes too gut-wrenching to report).
Alone with the mocking resonance of age as memories echo in her mixed up head
She wonders how it passed so fast, in a blur now, and how it crashed and burned
They did things by the book: pew warming, fellowship galore, saying the right words
Their kids dressed the part, learned the verses, told God thank you for the food (all rote, and said merely to pass and eat the bread).
Dying in the bed she made, no child or spouse to hold her hand, she has a revelation!
A volunteer, so sweet to share the Scriptures every day with one whose eyes are blind in more ways than we count,
Keeps reading to the white haired mom who finally sees the light
And just in time, before this mother gets the call, with one last push of will she writes a shaky note to be given to her kin (She cries; it is so late).
Dear ones, I treasured every precious sound you made but did not understand about the useless din
We heard and relished music of our worldly life which led us down some primrose paths and fooled our hearts with lies
The only truth there is about that major sense the Lord warned could cause our just demise is simple and the bottom line in life.
WE HAD THE EARS--for sure. The saddest part is this: WE DID NOT HEAR (I pray you listen now and try to pass it on).
____
Acts 28:27 (Amplified Bible)
For the heart (the understanding, the soul) of this people has grown dull (stupid, hardened, and calloused), and their ears are heavy and hard of hearing and they have shut tight their eyes, so that they may not perceive and have knowledge and become acquainted with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their souls and turn [to Me and be converted], that I may heal them.
