Cliché for those like me,
A writer in the “almost” club
Who’s lost her dignity.
A heart tear I thought repaired
From the last reply sent back
Tore open just a smidgen,
Let hope sneak through the crack.
An agent showed some interest,
Asked for exclusive time,
Two weeks to read my manuscript;
My hope soared past a nine.
Hands strike twelve with no reply;
My hope begins to tumble;
Two weeks, four weeks, six—hello?
Time passing turns me humble.
Eight weeks I’m less neurotic;
Checked the mail ten times today
Before I’ve had my breakfast—
Swear by nine I’ll walk away.
I dream of being published,
Wish I sealed that tear with tape;
Waiting would be simple
If my dreams could not escape.
I sent my novel roaming
With the chance I’d see her soar,
But worry she is buried
Under piles on a floor.
Next time I build up courage
And prepare a postal trip,
I’ll seal my heart with iron
And heed heaven’s writing tip:
Lay my burdens at His feet
Or rather lay my story,
Remind myself why I write—
I’m writing for His glory.
