(with apologies to John Bunyan)

With shaking limbs, face pale and taut,
Fearful, and shaken to the core,
He didn’t halt, but onward walked
Towards the terrifying roar.

With deep regret at progress slow,
(His daylight sleep had cost him dear!)
The dark of night pressed round him so
Whilst roaring filled his inmost ear.

Then Christian suddenly saw before
His eyes, a sight worse than all dread.
The visualisation of the roar -
Great lions filled the path ahead.

Crouched, snarling, waiting for their prey,
Mouths opened like a yawning grave,
They challenged all who came their way
To dare to make the onward move.

Then Christian lifted up his eyes
And saw against the sky, the towers
Of Palace Beautiful – energised
He summoned all his strength and powers.

Then he espied there stood nearby
A porter, Watchful was his name,
And watch he did, with careful eye
Those who towards the Palace came.

‘Now, Is your strength so very small?
If entrance here you long to gain.
Don’t fear the lions, you’ll not fall,
For they’re held back by a long chain.’

‘Look down, and you will clearly see
A beam of light to guide your way.
If you walk in it steadfastly
You’ll find the lions held at bay.’

The lions grrrowled, the roaring grew,
But Christian, by the light, was calmed .
And though he trembled, he got through,
And reached the Palace quite unharmed.

‘Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.’ Psalm 119:105
