The computer booted up, and she smiled as she saw her friend's screen name on her instant messenger contact list. She clicked on the familiar user name; Light2179. It was Rose, her friend she met through an on-line forum.
She'd always remember their first "official" chat.... Watching the same movie on TV, though miles apart, and discussing it and quoting lines to each other.
HES_Eagle: Hello!
Light2179: Hello. What's up?
She grinned as Light's purple words filled up the screen. She wondered why she chose purple... It was probably one of her favorite colors. She had never asked, but it didn't matter much.
HES_Eagle: Nothing much. Long day at work today.... Can I rant a bit?
Light2179: Sure.
HES_Eagle: My first appointment called me ten minutes after her scheduled time, to tell me she'd be late, and would be there in about twenty minutes. So I told her it would probably be best if she rescheduled. She said she was already half way there. So I pretty much had to say okay, even though I knew it would probably set me back for the rest of the morning. We're SO accommodating to them.... seeing them at 1:30 even if their appointment was at 11:30, not making a big deal if they are thirty minutes late... and we're supposed to be preparing them for a job? It doesn't make sense. :-/.
HES_Eagle: One of my co-workers had a client who complained to her because he was three hours late for his job interview and the interviewer wouldn’t see him. That's what your tax money helps fund. Yay!
Light2179: lol! I can see how that would be annoying, though.
Emily chuckled. Somehow, Rose always seemed to understand. And she could share things with her she couldn't share with others. Perhaps it was the safety of distance. She knew it wouldn’t get back to anyone else.
She thought back to when she finally had the opportunity to meet Rose about a year ago, after spending so long getting to know her on-line. There was no awkwardness when they met in person, either. It was almost like they were the sisters they never had.
Light2179: Cow.
Emily laughed at the inside joke from their first online meeting and typed the expected reply.
HES_Eagle: 'Nother cow.
Light2179: Actually, I think that's the same one.
Whether it was from a favorite movie or lyrics from a favorite song, seemingly random phrases were likely to pop up in the middle of the conversations, and the other would complete the next line.
Emily remembered something she'd been meaning to tell Rose, and, since they had been on the same subject for a bit, (somewhat of a rarity in their conversations), she prefaced it with her common tag.
HES_Eagle: *Random* I've got a prayer request for you...
She told Rose her prayer request, knowing she could trust her friend.
Light2179: Of course. Anything I can do?
HES_Eagle: Not really. Just pray. Hey, I've got to head to bed.
And thus began the nightly ritual.
HES_Eagle: Good night. Sleep well. God bless.
Light2179: K. Good night. Sleep well. God bless.
HES_Eagle:Have a great day tomorrow!
Light2179: You too!
Emily reviewed tonight's conversation quickly and smiled. Purple words of laughter. Purple words of comfort. Purple words of love. All from over 300 miles away. God is good.
