but inside
battered ruins crumble beneath the siege of your relentless
indifference and I wince behind eyes dry with years of neglect.
You crush me, desolate, nonexistent … as
I hide in a memory of swaddle, powder, and warmth to
prolong the fallacy of what I pretend to be
but inside
old wounds seep crimson, gouged with barbed grousing and apathetic
unconcern, coldness, ice and I falter behind a practiced smile.
You rend me, thoughtless, dispassionate … as
I huddle beneath the fading memory of mother’s unconditional eyes,
grasping at a failing image of who I’d hoped to be
but inside
the edges of sanity curl and split in the graying night;
ashen chalk and bitter smoke shadow cheeks drawn with whispered sorrow.
You starve me, thieving, keeping … as
I hunger to suckle on the memory of a sheltered infancy buried
within the person that I pray to be …
help me to once again find my lost sanctuary of innocence.
