I know you are there,
hurting in your heart,
afraid,
resisting the aching pull that cries,
“Reach out. Reach out, and mend the awful tear.”

You must know
I’m just one call away.

Words
like flames
flew from our lips.
Searing, hot, scorching
word bullets,
each targeting tomorrow and
finding tomorrow’s
heart.

Our tomorrow died.

We’ve drifted far now,
too far
for drifting back once more.

Yet,
still I see you there,
just like me,
hurting in the deepest part,
just one call
away.

If
I knew the number,
knew the place,
nothing could keep me from
calling you.

I’d pour out every word.
I'd send this tear stained heart
through earth and air
to say,
“Forgive me,”
if I could but find you
once again.

I’d weep
if that would keep you near.

In the whisper of a heartbeat
I’d say the words,
healing words that touch
and turn cold mountain rock to
fertile loam
and bring two wandering hearts
back home.

I’m just one call away.
Please call, dear one.
Call me, I pray.
