"We're playing Mafia. I’m moderating," Tim, the floor's resident advisor, explained. "Want to join us for the next game?"
"Oh, I don't think so. I’m pretty tired."
"Then just watch for awhile. It's Friday night. You're a college student. You're supposed to stay up until two in the morning. Then you can sleep until noon."
Leah shrugged her shoulders. "I guess I'll watch for a bit."
"Great." Tim turned back to the group gathered around him. "Now, where were we? Ah. That's right. Krystal was defending herself against the cruel and unusual death of Chris. If you recall, he was run over by a semi-truck last night. Repeatedly."
"Hey," Krystal protested, "What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Anyway, I couldn't have done it. As you all know, I am the town's baker. I was slaving around in a hot kitchen all night so you would have freshly made donuts in the morning. There's no way I could have killed Chris. Besides, do you really want to kill me? I know how crabby all of you get when you don't get your morning donut and coffee."
"Any other comments before the jury votes?" Tim asked.
"Nope."
"Okay. All in favor of executing Krystal for Chris' death, raise your right hand." Six hands went into the air. "With seven people still in the game, that is most definitely a majority. Sorry Krystal."
"But..."
Tim raised a hand to stop her. "Dead people don't talk."
The game continued until there were five citizens left. "Day has come. And sadly, there was another death last night. Yes, last night, Jody decided to try her hand at baking, since all of you killed off Krystal. Unfortunately, Jody does not have the baking gene. Her house burned down, and she could not escape. It was later discovered that someone had tampered with her oven. Who shall we try for her horrible death?"
"You know," Dave reasoned, "I think it's Ashley. She's been unusually talkative this game. She's only talkative when she's in the Mafia."
Tim turned to Ashley. "What is your defense?"
Ashley thought quickly. "I'm a fire fighter. Do you really think I'd want to create more work for myself?"
"Well, you know what they say," Dave said. "Firefighters live for 'The Big One.'" Three heads nodded in agreement.
"Any other defense, Ashley?" Tim asked. She shook her head. "All in favor of executing Ashley to avenge Jody's death raise your right hand." Three hands went into the air. "Ashley, the people have spoken. Please leave the circle. Now." Tim addressed those still in the game. "And with two Mafia members left and one citizen, the game is over."
Dave and Joe gave each other high-fives. Dave walked over to Leah. "Want to play next game?"
"No, I don't think so. But I had fun watching."
"Are you sure?" he asked, "Because I’m about to make you an offer you cannot refuse."
Leah shook her head, chuckling as she walked back to her room. She was glad she was placed on this floor. Her floor mates were like the family she never had, the dorm her home, and the lounge was the family room for all the family gatherings.
