In the very first garden where weeds did grow,
And the sons of Adam had to till and hoe;
When the daylight faded and the nighttime fell,
Around the burning campfires there were tales to tell.
The stories were told by old Grandma Eve
About a place called Eden that they both had to leave.
"Your grandpa and me, we believed Satan's lie.
His persuasive whisper, you will not surely die!
You can be almighty, you can know all things.
You can relish all the power that knowing brings.
Just trust me now and listen to your wife
And you'll soon discover you're a god for life."
Then Adam would throw on a log or two,
And he'd start to croon before Eve was through.
With a far off look and glazed-over-eyes,
He would sing about a place called Paradise.
"There's a hole in my soul and my spirit's fallen through!
I confess, I'm a mess and I don't know what to do.
To exist like this is a penalty too great;
So far from my Lord, yet so near the Garden Gate."
To describe what he felt, he used what he knew,
And he sang about the day God's spirit withdrew.
When Satan came slithering across the wall
Said, "Adam, don't listen! You won't really fall!"
"There's a hole in my soul and my spirit's fallen through!
I'm afraid and dismayed and I don't know what to do.
No grace in this place where the spirit dies.
How my heart cries out for my home, Paradise."
Now Adam had a son, who received God's grace,
It pleased the Lord of Harvest to offer him a place
Of rest for his spirit and healing for his soul;
Abel's sacrifice was offered and by faith he was made whole.
The Bible doesn't tell us the end of this tale.
Whether Adam went to heaven or ended up in hell.
As time went on we know the world grew worse
The descendants of Adam all lived under the curse.
And then a Second Adam was born one night.
To a dark and sinful world He brought God's light.
The first Adam brought only death and disgrace.
The Second Adam brought the soul a gift of grace.
Two thousand years ago the second Adam came.
The second Adam died to bear the first Adam's blame.
The first Adam sinned and had to leave God's sight.
The second Adam paid the price to make it all right.
There's a hole in your soul and your spirit's falling through?
All alone, on your own, and you don't know what to do?
Romans 5 is alive with a story of God's plan.
For the Second Adam's death to bring new life to every man.
