“They’re GR-R-REAT!” roars Tony the Tiger for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes. You can visit the Great Lakes or read the Great Books or listen to music by the great masters. “Great” could even be part of your pet’s identification, Great Dane, or part of the title of a person, Alexander the Great and The Great Houdini. The word “great” is used quite profusely in our language, but, in reality, nothing compares to “great” as it refers to our God.
God is great in creation. On a recent Alaskan cruise I was reminded of the unsurpassable beauty that could have been created only by all-powerful God. We saw vast snowcapped mountain peaks, glaciers hued in blues and greens, rushing streams, dazzling waterfalls, stately trees, and wide vistas of ocean. The images were more immense than the widest camera lens could reveal, more beautiful than the most gifted artist could paint, and more powerful than the most skillful writer could put into words. What an awesome world our Lord has provided!
God is great in revelation. In His Word we read of His faithfulness to His people when they were rebellious and turned away to serve other gods again and again. The Bible tells us how He revealed His great love by providing His only Son for the salvation of all mankind. When we ask His forgiveness for our sins and accept this wonderful gift, we are accepted into God’s family to claim all the promises of His Word, including the promise that He is with us always, and that we will spend eternity with Him. I’m thankful for His faithfulness to me, as well as for the joy He has put into my heart. Indeed, great is our God!
