Angie sighed and looked around. “See what?”
“You didn’t see that light? Or whatever it was? I keep seeing it out of the corner of my eye. When I turn to look, it’s gone.”
“You need to get checked. Maybe your eyes are going crazy.” Angie muttered, “Along with your mind.”
Tess swatted at her sister, “I heard that.”
“There’s nothing there. Just unlock the door, these bags are getting heavy.”
“That was close. She almost saw you this time.”
“I know, and I know what I’m doing.”
“You act like you want her to see you.”
”Well, at least my charge is looking.”
“Angie, you wanna come with me tonight?”
“And spend all night with a bunch of geeks like you? No thanks.” Angie grabbed a can of pop from the fridge. “I have better things to do with my time.”
Tess put the last of the groceries away. “Well, I hope you change your mind. If you do, I’ll be leaving after dinner.”
“Push that button.”
”Ok.”
“I’ll just pull this plug out a tiny bit and….”
“Stupid computer. What’s wrong with it now?” Angie tried to turn it on again, but it was still dead. “I’m supposed to chat with Joe tonight.” She pouted and grabbed her phone and dialed. “Busy. Of course it’s busy, he’s on-line waiting for me.” She tossed the phone on her bed and headed back to the kitchen.
Tess looked up, “Pizza?” She took the pan out of the oven and set it on top of the stove.
“Yeah, I guess.” She got two plates from the dishwasher. “Um…is that invitation still open? My computer is dead. Going with you beats sitting here bored all night.”
”Sure is.” Tess smiled as she served up the pizza. “You might surprise yourself and enjoy it.”
”Whatever.” She blew on the pizza before taking a bite.
Tess bowed her head and said a silent prayer and began to eat.
“So how much is this going to cost tonight?”
”Nothing, it’s free.” Tess turned into the parking lot.
”Nothing is free. There’s always a catch.” Angie checked her makeup in the mirror.
“Stay close to her. It’s going to be a long night.” He nodded at the dark cloud gathering just over the horizon.
“Got it.”
“This line is really long. I can’t believe so many people came out for this.” Angie craned her neck around the people in front of her to see how far from the door they were.
“It’ll go fast once the doors open. You’ll love the band. They have an awesome sound.”
The darkness slithered closer to the group.
Angie shuddered. “What was that?”
“What was what?” Tess looked around.
”I saw something…weird.”
”Weird how?”
Angie shook her head, “I guess your craziness is catching. Nevermind.”
“Back off, that one’s mine,” he hissed.
They all maneuvered closer to the girls.
“Not if she has hope restored and takes that step.”
“Ha! You know I stole that when their parents died so… mysteriously.”
“But, then why has this one only grown stronger since then?” He simply smiled and held his ground.
As they made their way to their seats, Angie read the banner above the stage, “Having Only Peace Eternally? How corny is that?”
Tess said, “That’s the name of the band, Hope.”
The curtain went up and the music started.
“I’m not going to tell you again, that one is mine.” He moved to cover her ears.
“No, she’s not.” A sword slid gently between the scaly hand and Angie’s ear.
He cringed and backed off.
Angie smiled, “This isn’t half bad.”
”Told you.” Tess clapped to the beat.
“Why don’t you leave? You look like you’re not feeling well.”
“I’m fine,” he spat. He reached out to touch her heart, but again a sword came between the two.
As the band announced the alter call, Tess looked at her sister and said another quiet prayer.
