“No, no, no!” Lucy exclaimed. “This can’t be happening!” She tried to grab the papers, but the wind whipped them out of her reach.
“I’m sorry I’m so clumsy,” Nate said. He felt awful. He was in a hurry to get to his Bible class at Charis Bible College and wasn’t paying attention to things around him.
“I can’t believe it.” Lucy stood rigid as a tear found its way down her pale face. “What am I going to do now?” She shook her head slowly with a bewildered look in her eyes.
“I’m so sorry,” Nate said, unable to think of anything else to say to this woman who was clearly in shock. “Can I do anything to help you?”
Lucy looked up at Nate. “I don’t think so. You see, those were my notes for teaching my first adult Sunday school class. I’m lost without them. How can I face these people when I have nothing to say?”
Nate thought that even though he couldn’t get her notes back he could at least try to soothe her. “My name is Nate,” he said. “Why don’t you have a seat on this bench? What is your name?” he asked. He thought that if he could get her to think about something simple it would help her come back to reality.
She looked him as if seeing him for the first time. “My name is Lucy. I’m sorry, this is all just overwhelming. I don’t know what to do. I have to teach the class in 20 minutes.” She was in a daze. She honestly could not see any way out of this situation.
“Lucy, let me ask you something,” Nate said as he tried to get her to focus on what was happening. “When did you write your notes?”
“I’ve been working on them all week, but I just wrote them out last night.” It took all she had to find answers to Nate’s questions.
“Do you remember anything you were going to discuss?”
Lucy was coming out of her daze and tried to really focus on Nate and the questions he was asking her. “I remember that I was talking about fear and worry. It says in Philippians 4:6 not to be anxious about anything.”
“That’s a good verse. It’s one of my favorites. Do you see how that scripture might be useful in this situation?”
Lucy’s eyes widened and she realized where Nate was headed. “That is exactly the verse I need right now.” Lucy was amazed at how God always worked in her life.
“Who gave you the words you wrote on those pages?” Nate tried to prove a point.
“Well, I guess it came straight from God. He really spoke to me through His Word and my past experiences. I guess He is even using one now.” Lucy had to smile at the irony.
“If God gave you the revelation you put on those papers, don’t you think He can give you them again? Maybe even better ones?” Nate hoped he was getting through to her.
Lucy grinned and let out a little laugh. “You are right. I was so worried about the words on those pages, that I didn’t really understand the main point. Wow! That is a sober lesson. If I really trusted in Him as much as those notes, I wouldn’t be so anxious about losing them. Thank you, Nate, to help me understand the true meaning of trusting God. I believe I can go teach that class with nothing but the Holy Spirit leading me. You really did me a favor, Nate.”
Nate smiled. “It is my pleasure. I am willing to bump into you anytime you need me.” The two shared a laugh as they parted ways. ‘Thank you, God, for giving me the right words to help her today,’ Nate prayed as he walked away. ‘You really are amazing!’
