Her life had begun in this very stream. When she was several months old she had begun her trek to the Pacific Ocean. There she had traveled over a thousand miles, feeding and growing to a healthy twelve pounds. Now it was time to return. She does not need a map. She has her own built in Global Positioning System. It is believed she uses the earth’s magnetic field as her compass.
After being in the vast Pacific Ocean so long, how did she find the right freshwater stream? Scientists are not sure, but they believe as she swam out of her birth stream she stored up a ‘smell memory bank’ which would help her on her return trip.
When she finally arrives at the same area where her life began, her energy is quickly ebbing away. She carefully lays three to five thousand eggs and then dies. Thus the life cycle of one Coho salmon ends, and another begins. What an amazing creature! What an amazing Creator.
You and I are on a journey as well. Eternity has been set in our hearts, but we do not have a Global Positioning System. How then do we find eternal life? Our Creator has given us His Word, the Bible, to guide us to our final destination. In John 14:6 Jesus declares, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Romans 10:13 assures us, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (NIV). Just as our Great Creator expended such great care in equipping the salmon with exactly what it needs to keep its life cycle going, He has made a way for you and me to obtain eternal life in Him. I encourage you to call upon the name of the Lord today.
