October 15, 1945 – April 25, 2003
Beyond the wreckage, a man in white stood waiting.
He stood quietly to give the other man time.
The other man was silent and not sure what to do.
After a while, the man came closer and stood before the other.
He softly spoke. “David, it is time to go.”
The man shook his head. “Lord, I can’t. Will they ever understand?”
Christ turned him from the earthly scene
and with a sense of sadness replied.
“They won’t today. David, it will take time.”
The man turned back around and asked. “Then how can I go?”
Behind him, Christ spoke. “Once I told you,
that I would leave behind the 99, in order to find the one lost.
You have been lost and now you are found.”
A sense of peace filled the man. Yet, he still could not go.
He turned to face Christ and sadly confessed.
“I left behind all of the wrong things.”
In reply, Christ swept His arms wide
And thousands of memories gathered around them.
Sisters and brothers and family fights.
Sisters and brothers and a sense of family sometimes right.
Joy and pain filled his heart as he saw the images of his wedding
and the births of seven children.
He suddenly knew the two small ones standing beside Christ
Were the little ones who did not stay.
Tears fell as he cried. “Lord, I hurt her. I hurt them.”
Christ spoke gently among the memories gathered around the man.
“David, the legacy of any man is the good and bad of who he was.”
For everyone who knew you, they each have piece of you.
And yes, some of it is good and some of it is bad
But this I say to you, what you could not give in life you can give in death.
You can let go and you can come home.
And in the days ahead, you can give them the peace you sought in life.
The man gave one last look.
Christ spoke. “What was broken is now repaired
And this is what you and I will share with them.”
The man smiled and with peace he replied.
“Let’s go home.”
