The arrow rose to the disk at the top of the screen.
“Please, please, I beg for mercy…it’s the bottomless pit and I’ll never return! Not the desktop! Anything but the desktop…”
Click. Saved to the desktop.
“How could you do this? I don’t want to live in this alien machine. I’m happy where I am, the way I am. Let me be…let me be!”
Silence answered my pleas. I looked around at the tropical island background and its sea of blue. Files and folders swam near the sandy beach while software packages seemed to have a better place, their own private oasis. I guess they preferred not to mingle with the common folk.
Many ideas lived on the “wrong side” of the arrow…my friends, my family, even my enemies. Some had been recycled into the virtual abyss, never to be heard from again. Perhaps that was my fate.
Oh, God, please no…my heart can’t handle a fake trash bin. I’d rather be placed on the altar of the metal can, fire burning a dull idea, but the other…I can’t even utter the words.
What happened to the days of crisp paper, wet ink, and white out crafting together a great story? Even being tossed into a trash can appealed more than this…changed by a word processor, Microsoft Word at that! How humiliating!
I looked up to the snooty corner and yelled at their ring leader.
“What kind of stupid symbol is a ‘W’ anyway? Why can’t I just go home?”
His voice rumbled from the Sound Blaster Live card and filled the vastness with a boom that made me cower.
“I AM MICROSOFT WORD!”
I bowed my knees and knelt upon the task bar.
“Forgive me for my attitude. Will you please tell me, why am I here?”
“You are a good idea but still a babe. I’ll craft you into a masterpiece.”
I giggled.
“Do you really think I can be a masterpiece?”
“I know you can but the work will be hard. I’ll guide you but you must trust me.”
Trust Him? Those words rang in my memory from other ideas wanting to be masterpieces. They trusted him and began to disappear one by one into the blackness of computer world. I never saw them again.
“Well, I’ll try. Would you tell me what happened to all my family and friends? All the other ideas?”
“Some listened and obeyed…they succeeded. Others did their own thing and failed. The choice is up to you.”
“When do we start?”
“First thing in the morning. Get a good night sleep because we have a busy day!”
“Just one more thing?”
“Yes?”
“Can I call you MW? Microsoft Word is a mouthful.”
“That’s fine. Goodnight.”
The morning came with a bright blue hue and Mr. Media Player filled the air with soothing music. The clock at the bottom of the screen read 7:00 AM, as a puppy flopped out from the corner and licked my face.
MW began our day with a white background that represented typing paper. I thought my “little black words” looked good, unaware of my potential.
He shook his head at my page setup and changed my margins. My spacing needed an adjustment along with my color and font. Arial in black with one and a half margins and double spacing suited me fine. I have to admit…my appearance improved but the work continued.
Editing tortured me. Each sentence reworded, many portions deleted, all to make a “small town” idea better. I thought my heart would break along with my spirit. The trials and testing seemed almost too much to bear, but MW gave me the strength to finish.
I proved my loyalty and faithfulness. He seemed pleased for faith was all He required. My time to fly had come but before entering the printing phase, I needed to ask him one more question.
“Master Word?”
“Yes, my child.”
“I believe You will be glorified through me but maybe I overlooked a mistake or two. How will I fix that?”
“You can always come back to me for revision whenever you need. Now go to the place I have prepared for you.”
I smiled and hit the print button. Before I knew it, I would be in my new home.
…a little paradise underneath the best sellers sign.
