I can do this. I can do this. 1… 2… Why did I agree to come to this party?

“Sarah, are you coming?”

I look up to see my friend standing before the open door of a large, brightly lit room. Jubilant noises filter out into the dimly-lit hallway.

“Well?”

I barely nod. I can do this. Just this one time, I can venture into a room filled with people.

A step forward. I can see inside. Come on, self, they are only people.

I look at them and try to see what I have been told everyone else sees when they look at people: normal figures of varying height and girth, with hair that ranges from blonde to black, and eyes that tend in the direction of either brown or blue.

Try as I might, I can’t make myself see that kind of normalcy. Instead of such clear-cut figures, the vision I behold is more akin to a piece of impressionist art. The human figures radiate all manner of colors that blur, twirl, and blend one into the other.

Another painful step forward.

I begin to feel the colors. Each color pulsates with the emotions and inner state of its possessor. There is anger, stress, giddiness, emptiness, loneliness, pride, expectation, a desperate attempt to hang onto the happiness of a moment. There is confusion and frustration and self-satisfaction and bitterness and so much more and I feel every single one as though it belongs to me; as though it radiates from within me instead of from any number of unknown acquaintances.

I pull my own spirit inward, making it so small that it is almost invisible. If I can just make myself small enough, then maybe nothing from the outside will be able to touch me. Maybe, if I can just disappear, then I can enter the room.

I close my eyes and take another step. Almost unknowingly, this step is a backwards step. I can’t do this. Why did I come? Why do I see all these things? Why am I able to feel everything that everyone else is feeling?

“It’s Sarah, right?”

I open my eyes and find myself looking at a calm, whitish-yellowish figure whose colors are falling out from him like a lightly flowing fountain. Peace and joy flood their way into me.

“I’m Eli. Listen, I don’t mean to intrude, but I caught a glimpse of your color right before it disappeared and knew I had to come talk to you.”

“Color? You see the colors?” My eyes open wide and I look beyond the impression to see the clear features of Eli’s face: bright blue eyes that peer through the lenses of black-rimmed glasses; light brown hair cut close to his head.

Eli nods in answer to my question. “I see them. And I’m not the only one. There are more of us than you think and no, it isn’t the result of some kind of crazy X-Men chromosome.”

“What is it then? Why is it?”

“Here.” Eli hands me a business card. “We meet on Saturday nights. Come and we’ll tell you more.”

I take the card.

The following night I find myself standing outside of what appears to be the assembly room of a small church.

One step brings me to the threshold of an open door. A sense of peace greets me.

Another step brings me into the room, in full view of those gathered. Their colors are of a similar hue and nature as Eli’s.

Eli walks over to greet me and ushers me towards the rest of the group. After some brief introductions, we sit down in chairs that have been formed into a circle.

At long last, answers start coming.

“The great God of the Universe created every person to be made of two components: a body and a spirit. Most people see only the physical body. Some, however, have been given the ability to perceive the spirit as well. On your own, this can be overwhelming. But, if you unite your spirit with His then His strength flows through you and teaches you how to manage, develop, and serve others with this gift you have been given.”

I take a deep breath and allow my spirit to expand until it connects with something strong, secure, and beautiful. Numerous questions flood my mind, but for the first time ever, I feel a peace that comes not from outside of myself, but from within.
