It’s like when someone piles on extra work, sets quotas too high, makes excessive demands, and continually pushes until something has to give or someone breaks.
It’s like being emotionally overwhelmed by life’s circumstances such as: financial issues, marital problems, children to support, and something must give or someone breaks.
Overwhelmed, over worked, stressed out, too many difficult problems, pushed beyond endurance and the breaking point comes.
All it takes is one final power surge. And with the heightened distress, emotions a mess, one bad choice leaves only more distress.
Can’t take it back! It’s irreversible!
Rescue came too late!
Someone died. Others cried. No one tried.
No one said, “It’ll be okay. I’ll help you.”
You ask why? The reasons were in hidden in plain sight. She was alone, providing for two children, had a demanding job, worked overtime to pay the bills, but exhaustion tilted the scales against her.
She had to say no too many times. No, you can’t go. No we can’t afford it. No your dad didn’t call.
The final surge came in a call from her doctor . . . Cancer, stage four.
Where were the Christians when she needed them? Did they simply turn away? Did they judge her? Or maybe they were emotionally stressed and overwhelmed too?
“Lord, help us to open our eyes and see the hurting person in the cubical next to us or behind the reception desk in our doctor’s office or sitting nearby at a PTO meeting. Help us realize that our opportunities to minister are all around us.
“Father, we so often relate ministry to the church building only. Help us see our mission field is where we live and work every day. Someone is at their breaking point, right now! Help us see them, Lord. Help me see them. Amen”
There are several scriptures that came to mind, as I wrote this. Here are my versions of them.
Galatians 6:2—Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
II Thessalonians 5:14—We urge you to admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
John 13:34—I’m giving you a new commandment, to love one another just as I have loved you.
