Don’t you just love the internet? You start out searching for one thing and wind up engulfed in a plethora of articles, videos, presentations, podcasts, what have you—completely unrelated to your initial search. What a distraction!
I often go on these research tangents, being a science enthusiast, and on one occasion, fell upon a jaw-dropping video on the subject of holography.
Holography is a fascinating visual technology that presents 3-D images both solid and translucent. You may remember seeing the ghost-like ball room dancer figures displayed at a popular amusement park in California—developed so long ago and yet continues to draw crowds all year-round. Now they’re popping up all over the place, at hotels, conferences, concerts and malls. Holograms, as they’re called, are getting more sophisticated (and spookier) than ever. And if you don’t know much about them, you won’t believe what they can do. It’s rather exciting.
My imagination goes on overload, so much so, I could write a few science-fiction novels on the subject with ease (well, maybe not with ease). But with what may seem benign on the surface could have some spiritual ramifications if not kept in check. Can realistic illusions confuse or even mislead us? Technology (aka knowledge) is increasing at an exponential rate and is never at a loss to impress. I recently watched a very convincing video on holography and holograms. Famous people (some deceased) would make electrifying appearances with a message and then vanish. Even though I went into it with some knowledge of how the illusions were created, it’s easy to see why folks are dazzled by its allure.
And with that, if we tie it all in with what the word of God says about deception, especially in the last days, we find several passages on the subject, for example:
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (Ephesians 4:14, KJV)
Trying to stay informed is quite a challenge these days. Keeping a watchful eye and taking everything man conjures up to distract us from the truth requires us to tread with great caution.
The Lord lifts the curtain sometimes and reveals a little here and a little there of how things work. And as we’ve done over the centuries, discover these incredible slices of truth, thinking His thoughts after Him(1), as we rely on His Word to guide our steps.
And if there’s any concern whether we as believers can be deceived, we know, thankfully, God’s glory is unimaginable – far more powerful than mere technology can ever hope to achieve. And when He returns, there will be no more deception and surely no doubt. Amen!
For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. (Romans 14:11, KJV)
