This had been the same topic of conversation every night. The warden had been very good about consigning an unfortunate group of ‘societal waste’ to remain without purpose inside these walls. The prison was intentionally kept dark while those inside could only reminisce about what it was like on the outside.
Sometimes the cell door would open and there would be the hope that one of them would be released. There were moments when the warden would examine some of the inmates, but seemed disgusted by the scum in his jail and sent them back to the confines of the cold, dark chamber. Sometimes the warden added to the already crowded inmate population.
Lately there was a great restlessness in the cell and some felt much abused by the warden. That’s what led to the most recent talk of breaking out.
Some of the inmates had slipped on a particularly disgusting bit of slime located at the bottom of their cell. They lamented their living conditions, but seemed at a loss as to who should be notified. The warden didn’t seem to care and only he had the power to release them from their detention center.
In the dark they had no idea how rugged they actually looked. None seemed to remember when they first came to the point of incarceration and personal care was almost non-existent. It was not uncommon to see inmates with long hair. Without proper sanitation the odor was offensive even to the prisoners.
That’s when there was the discovery of an inmate that had expired sometime in the night. There was a gathering and a general lament. It was common knowledge that this would be the ultimate fate of everyone in this forsaken penitentiary.
Then came the morning when a new sound was heard. A loud, persistent noise penetrated the walls and refused to subside. Some were nervous while others were certain things could get no worse. Covert plans were being discussed about this possible diversion that might lead to a prison break.
The buzzing sound stopped and the anxiety grew as the sound of footsteps was clearly heard.
The door began to open and a deep intake of breath was detected as the pale face of a young woman with a beautiful ring looked down on the sorry looking inmates in her new husband’s old refrigerator - a vacuum cleaner stood guard just behind her.
She made quick work of exonerating all fuzzy felons and sent them on an all expense paid vacation to a place called Landfill where they were allowed to live out their natural life in warmth and privacy.
The prison was never allowed to be filled with so many felons again and the warden was subjected to a rather severe tongue-lashing for his cruel and unusual punishment of leftovers.
“This explains why a man… is joined to his wife…” (Genesis 2:24 - NLT).
I suppose it is possible there are other explanations for the wondrous mystery of marriage.

At first, I thought she was WEARING the refrigerator! LOL
Then I understood what the forsaken penitentiary was! ROFL!
I have to warn you that not all new wives instinctively know how to tame a bachelor-turned-husband. And some husbands are actually like the wife in your story.
Now I am going out to see what's in the fridge for breakfast, and the occupants had better not give me any lip!
Excellent writing!!
