Sheer largesse of wildlife in motion,
Seeking new refuge and fare,
Sure feats of precise navigation
Journey by air, land, or sea,
Veins and arteries of God’s making;
Linking diverse habitats,
Important to our ecosystems.
Crimson-throated majesty,
Fluttering its wings in rapid beats,
Like a heart palpitating
Flying right, left, up, down, and backwards
Commuters on a freeway,
Solitary trip on the same road
Stopping for flower’s nectar,
Reaching its own particular nest.
Herds of black-and-white horses
Shrouded in uniquely striped patterns;
Traveling long distances
In search of lush grasses and water
Risky trek for easy prey,
Predators like lions and cheetahs
Stand ready to pounce and kill
Any unsuspecting casualties.
Females spawn a mass of eggs,
Depositing them in gravel beds,
Hatchlings grow and develop
Before heading out to the ocean
Crowning the cycle of life,
Sockeye salmon return to their roots,
Adult’s death leads to child’s birth
No introduction or connection.
The sojourn is now complete,
After moving through diverse locales,
Covering long distances,
The chain of flight has gone full circle.
Home again but not for long,
Creatures’ innate and external cues,
Warn them of the season’s end,
Preparing them to begin again.
