“I can’t understand it,” she told him. “You wouldn’t believe the dreadful thoughts I am having. I don’t want to deny God, I don’t want to curse God, yet all these things happen in my mind, and I can’t seem to control it.”
“I’ll send Grace and Sally up to see you,” Matt told her. “Tell them all about it and they will get the prayer group praying for you around the clock. We will help you all we can.”
The doctors and nurses cared for Dorothy’s physical recovery, which seemed slower than a snail on holiday. Her husband, Stan, sat by her side during the day, keeping her company and encouraging as best he could. But no one could help her at night through the relentless torment.
God doesn’t love you. You are not getting better, in fact wasn’t all that pain today telling you that it is getting worse? Stan didn’t stay very long today, perhaps he doesn’t care.
You’re hopeless.
Maybe God isn’t even there after all. What makes you think he is?
‘Shut Up’ she screamed into her pillow, tears streaming. Her head thumped. She couldn’t get comfortable with bandages enveloping the right side of her head. O why had this aneurism grown, why did she have to go through all this, why, God, why?
Grace and Sally visited each day and talked with her.
“We’ve got the prayer group up and running,” they assured her. “You are under demonic attack and we will come against it in the name of Jesus. We have a 24-hour roster and we know everyone prays for you often through the day as well.”
Dorothy lay silently clutching Sally’s hand. She couldn’t think. She couldn’t pray. She might as well be dead.
Six months later:
Dorothy sat at home, her friends Sally and Grace beside her. The kitchen bench was laden with cakes, meals and fruit sent by the church. Dorothy was still not feeling like too many visitors, so they were carefully rostered and Sally and Grace brought contributions from everyone.
“You’ve come a long way,” Sally said gently.
“I’m still in awful pain,” said Dorothy, “but my mind has cleared a lot. I can’t believe how terrible those first few weeks in hospital were, my mind was such a mess.”
“We got everyone praying,” reminded Grace.
“It made a huge difference too,” said Dorothy. “When I couldn’t even think, you were able to call out to God for me. I am so grateful.”
“We all need friends to hold us up,” said Sally. “Remember when Moses’ friends held his hands up when the people of Israel were in battle. That was our role.”
“I am so grateful,” repeated Dorothy. “Eternally grateful to you all.”
