With just one quick turn off the freeway, we regrettably found ourselves in Sleazyville, possibly one of the most undesirable areas in the city. It was at night and the streetlights were dim. Solid steel bars covered every door and window. The neighborhood appeared nearly abandoned, except for a few cars cruising the street. Their booming base tones thumped out a beat that vibrated our car like thunder.
I held my breath as we slowed to a stop and waited for the light to turn green. Nervously, we drove ahead keeping our heads rigidly facing forward, with our eyes darting side to side. It was a forever mile, or so, before we made it out of the gloom and into a more cheery part of town.
After the blood returned to my face, and I started breathing normally again, I shared with my husband Paul my newfound revelation.
"Next time we need to look at a map…or map quest it… or something."
Paul nodded and let out a deep breath. "Yep. That sounds like a good idea."
It was another few miles before arriving at the freeway. We drove onto the entrance with joyful acceleration, vowing never to take that route again.

We travel frequently on business, and there are times when we happen into unfamiliar territory with absolutely no clue which road we should take to get to our next destination.
Therefore, we're becoming quite dependent on good ole Google Maps. It's an application on our iphone, and Paul's favorite. The soft female voice doesn't criticize either one of us when we've made a wrong turn, but politely hints when we've gone astray. When she says, "Turn around at your earliest opportunity," it tells me that she truly cares and is paying close attention.
I think I appreciate her the most in those moments of sheer panic when we're having to weave through labyrinths of interchanging freeways, all going in different directions. Exiting from one to merge onto another, and then another. From sixty-five mpg down to thirty-five, then quickly accelerating up to fifty, and then suddenly, screeching to a stop in order to avoid a collision.
I ponder the engineering genius' who came up with all the madness of twisting mazes ripe with chaos and road rage.
What a thrill.
Then I wonder why anyone would pay good money for the adrenalin rush created by some hair raising endeavor such as - oh, let's say skydiving - when they can just drive across town for free.
In the midst of all this, I try to encourage myself with the fact that there really is only one thing I need to concern myself with.
"Where am I going?"
When I search for directions in driving, I'll go to a map for answers. When I search for directions in life, I'll refer to His Word, the Bible.
"Which way should I go and what should I do?"
God's amazing map for life is the Bible, and His gentle voice is the Holy Spirit. God's word gives us direction we need when we search for it. He will never leave us to venture on our own when we cling to Him, but is indeed faithful to guide us through the twists and turns in this crazy world. He gives wisdom and clarity in a place filled with non-sense and confusion. No longer am I a lost child who blindly wanders, hoping to make it home on my own. He gives me answers when I ask. His road map directs us, and makes clear to all creation, that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
