A few chuckles rippled through the small crowd gathered. A short man with a red baseball cap raised his hand.
“Yes, that is my real name.” Continued Eve without looking at the man. He put his hand back down.
“We have a great tour planned for you guys. Please make sure that you stay with the tour at all times. In order to see all the things promised, we need you back on the bus at the appointed times. The bus will leave with or without you.”
“What if there is an emergency or someone gets sick?” Asked the wife of the man with the red hat.
“Thank you for that question. It brings me to our next point. You have an amazing guide. If any issues arise, including illness, please let your guide know. He will make the appropriate arrangements needed for any situation.”
“Is his name Adam?” snickered red hat. His wife rolled her eyes.
“No, “ said Eve politely, “You will call him Mr. G. Are there any other questions before I go on?” Silence answered her.
“Ok then, I have one last thing to discuss before you load up. I ask that you listen carefully because this is most important. You are about to tour some of the most famous ruins in the world. In order to get to these places you will be passing through some of the most famous tourist traps in the world. Please remember, everything you need will be provided by your guide. He will ensure that you have safe and appropriate food, drink, travel accommodations and shopping spots. Your safety and enjoyment are of high importance to us.”
Red hat rolled his eyes and whispered something to the man standing next to him.
“Is there a problem?” Eve asked kindly.
“Well, no disrespect Garden Girl, but we’re not children. I’m sure we can figure out where to eat and shop without a guide. You make it sound so serious. What’s the worst that could happen? We overpay for a piece of plastic? It’s hardly the end of the world.”
“You are right.“ Eve replied calmly. “Overpaying for a cheap trinket is not the end of the world.”
Red hat nodded his head, impressed with his own argument.
“Unfortunately,” she said quietly, “that is not the dangers of which I speak. The greedy market keep will be the least of your worries. The danger comes from others, professionals in deception. You are not children, but you are not wise in the ways of these types. I implore you to listen to your guide.”
Red hat huffed and rolled his eyes again.
“Vern” his wife said softly, laying a hand on his arm.
“Well, why do they care how I spend my money?” he whispered loudly to her.
Those around him shuffled sideways. Some gave him openly exasperated looks.
“We are not trying to tell you how to spend your money sir.” Eve tried again firmly. “We are concerned about your safety. There is a rare fruit that grows on a few of the surrounding islands. If you find yourself in the wrong market you will be tempted to purchase and taste the “fruit of the isles”. This fruit is beautiful to look at but once you taste it, you will be paralyzed; not permanently, but long enough for your salesman to take the rest of your money and dump you out of site.”
The small group stared somberly up at Eve. Even red hat stayed quiet.
“I don’t wish to frighten you.” She continued gently. “The fruit is just one of their many tricks. That is why it is so important for you to listen and follow your guide’s instructions. He knows where it is safe. He will provide you with what you need.”
Eve smiled at the group in front of her. “You are going to have a wonderful time. If you could just bring me your paperwork, we’ll get you on your way.”
Red hat made his way sheepishly up to her. She took his paperwork and handed him his pass.
“Make sure you listen to your guide,” she said quietly, with a wink to his wife. “Take it from this Eve, even here the fruit comes at a price you don’t want to pay.”
