Darkness hovers over me. I am a mere shadow of the man I was. Pity and resentment are my constant companions and the taste of death lingers in my mouth.
Rise up, Man of God.
My eyes see only that which should have been, what I could have done, and what I did wrong. Now I pay a price too great to bear.
Rise up, my son.
Merciful God, can you hear me? Do you remember that I was your child once?
Surely you must have enough compassion on my situation and end my life once and for all. Look at me! Others look but quickly turn their gaze away as if they were nipped by fire.
Rise up, child of God.
Father, my eyes grow dim. My legs do not belong to my body but dangle uselessly. My arms are frail and weak. Others change my diaper, bathe me, wipe my nose, even feed me! Can you not see I would be better off in the grave?
Daniel, Rise up!
(Silence, then heavy sobbing)
My beloved son...
Abba, Father, what is this? A powerful warmth penetrates my innermost being.
Weights fall off...chains are shattered... darkness flees. I can breathe deeply again for the first time since the accident.
Praise, praise praise rises up in me! I feel strength returning to my arms and hands. Look. Lord, I can lift them to you. My eyes can see you, and my ears can hear you.
Thank you, thank you, Lord God Almighty. I feel as though I have been born again, from night to day, from poor to rich. I yield my heart to you and give my life back to you. Use me in anyway you see fit. My heart is yours. My life is yours. I... am yours.
Epilogue: After Daniel's debilitating car accident in December of 2010, he fell into a deep depression. He had gone from working 70 hours a week to care for his family of five, to needing to be completely cared for. He had given up on the Lord, and given up on life. Six months after the accident he had a powerful, life changing encounter with his Maker. God was calling him to rise up and get back in the game.
Though still physically bound to a wheelchair, he was spiritually set free. Daniel became a mighty man of God. The Lord restored the use of his arms and hands.
He began to serve the Lord as an inspirational speaker, author, musician and songwriter. To this day, he and his family live for Jesus in every way they can.
