“I hate sulfur,” he said to his demon commander. “It burns. It stinks. Eventually I’ll be condemned to live in it forever. It’s why I work hard to take as many people with me as I possibly can. If I must suffer then so shall the multitudes.”
As he lifted his arms above his head, he said, “The meeting is called to order. Worship me.”
Thousands of bodies lay flat on the floor with their faces smashed into the rock under them. Everyone’s goal was not be noticed by the Evil One. No one dared look up in his direction.
With arms still lifted he bellowed, “I said worship me.”
Trembling voices took up a song of adoration to the Evil One. They declared his strength, deceitfulness and vileness. Once he was satisfied, he lowered his arms. All singing ceased.
Walking back and forth on the slate ledge, he said, “Today we have an opportunity to cause a mighty rift in the camp of the enemy. I have placed people in a specific church to create havoc and disunity among believers. By the end of the year, victory will be ours.”
The demons jumped up with fists raised in the air praising the Evil One.
“Once our undercover agents begin this path of destruction, we will step in and destroy those who are already wounded. It will be easy prey. However, the leader is strong. He will not go down without a fight. Even if he’s deeply wounded, he will try to get to the fortress. Whatever you do, do not let him get near it. In doing so, it could quickly undermine our victory.”
“Evil One, what is the name of this place of refuge?” asked one of the demons.
“I will not mention its name. The name is too powerful and awful for me to utter,” cried the Evil One. “If you fail to keep him away, you will be punished.”
“How will we know when to attack the wounded?” another demon asked.
“Right now I have agents in place who are stirring up the hearts of the people. The demon Rebellion is disguised in such a way they won’t even recognize evil is lurking in their midst. He will team with Pride and Disunity to get the people to think their way is the best way, and anyone who does not agree with them is narrow-minded and utterly wrong.”
“They will challenge the music being sung. They will be so vocal and adamant it will force people to take sides. They will condemn the way the Pastor speaks, his mannerisms and leadership style. They will put him under a microscope causing people to pick apart his family, preferences and personality. I wish we could go after sin issues and incorrect doctrine but that won’t be possible. Even though he isn’t a perfect human being, every day he becomes more Christ-like in his spirit-man.”
“Once the people are divided and pointing fingers at each other and the pastor, we will bring in Self-Righteousness and tear the place apart. Once folks rip each other to shreds, they will be so busy licking their wounds they won’t know what hit them. They will be vulnerable, scattered and alone.”
The Evil One rubbed his hands together hardly containing his glee in telling of the scene he set before them. “After we’re done with them, I doubt if they will ever cross the threshold of another church again. However, don’t let the Pastor, or any of them for that matter, get to the fortress. All will be lost, if they do.”
Lifting his hand to get his leader’s attention, one demon asked, “But sir, what’s so terrible about this place? What difference does it make?” Others nodded in agreement.
The Evil One pointed in the demon’s direction. “Take him to the darkest place in the caverns and chain him there. This fortress is more than just a place, it’s a name. It’s a name which cannot to be uttered. It would cause our defeat.”
As the demon was dragged away to the place of darkness, another demon demanded, “What is so terrible about the name ‘Mighty God’ anyway?”
A shriek resonated through the caverns as The Evil one sank to his knees on the ledge.
