How did I get into this situation? I reached the second most important position in the realm, after the king himself. I am not saying this out of pride, but through working hard, I scaled the dizzy heights to reach His Majesty's inner circle. I faced extreme prejudice, ridicule and hatred, all because I was born different. I started as a courtier with responsibility for the bed pan, people thought dealing with the king's excrement was all I was good for. Thankfully, they never realised how important a job this was, as you get to spend quality time with the king with no one else to disturb you. I remained in this great position for two years, until the Foreign Minister had an unfortunate riding accident and died. As His Majesty's representative to the Yedterf's trade delegation, the Foreign Minister's untimely demise nearly ended four years of negotiations.
This was when my promotion occurred. The king had come to trust me, especially after I discovered a death threat; he was being slowly poisoned, which I noticed because of a strangeness in his stool. It's a strange job, dissecting a man's toileting needs. But I learnt alot about medicine.
The king wanted someone he could totally trust for this mission. I also think the others in the king's cabinet were pushing for me to be removed from His Majesty's immediate presence.
As I was leaving to start my new mission, one of the king's advisers smugly told me to not be afraid to break a few eggs if I had to. He then looked at me and menacingly told me if I failed to get the result the kingdom needed, he knew one egg that would get broken. I so wanted to gut him from ear to ear for that insult.
I surprised everyone by successfully securing an extensive trade agreement in four months, much less time than others expected. I had pulled off a masterstroke of diplomacy.
It was not long after my return to His Majesty's side that he started to heavily rely on me for assistance. All was going so well, I had the respect and trust of the king and my word carried huge weight. Those who previously looked down on me and had ridiculed me, now feared me and had to bow to me. I was on top of the pile, had fine cloths, all the money I needed for a few lifetimes and the power to go with it.
I did not care if I alienated people, I was untouchable. I always remembered to show the king respect and loyalty and ensure I was of great value to him, but to the rest I really did not care what they thought.
In my new role to His Majesty, I organised the royal visit of the king of Gertyers to come to visit my king. This was a highly important visit, as it would help forment our kingdoms as the strongest in the known world. Some sensitive negotiations were to take place, including the marriage proposal of my king's eldest son to the king of Gertyers's daughter. This meeting was to be held, just between the two kings, in a secret walled garden in the old palace.
As the king's number two, I had to be able to hear what was going on. So I sat on top of the wall, just under the great oak tree. We knew this spot allowed for privacy, but permitted me to hear all being discussed below.
As I sat waiting for the two kings to arrive, I saw the adviser who had previously taunted me about breaking eggs approach. I was livid. How dare he approach me while I was doing the king's bidding? He came up to me, as if on an urgent errant, and sidled up to me.
'Baron Dumpty, you should never have treated us with such disrespect and contempt.' He took one last look around and shoved me off the wall.
The pain was excruciating as my shell shattered. As I lie here dying, my king runs over, tears streaming, pleading for his horsemen to help. The king cradles me in his arms, while my yoke pours through his fingers. I am now worrying, how will Humpty Dumpty be remembered?
