“Ouch, it’s too early!” as I hear the scrambling of feet in the hallway. We are all awake, anticipating a new day of scholastic achievement and the arrival of that familiar yellow bus.
“I was here first!” exclaimed Karrie, as she slammed the bathroom door.
“Mom, will you make Karrie get out?” snapped Kevin, “I have to take a shower!”
I try to ignore the question, knowing good and well that Karrie will get out when she is ready and not before. Sleepily, I shuffle into the kitchen hoping to find something edible for breakfast.
“Scrambled eggs and toast sounds good,” I say to myself thinking of the blustery weather outside. I prepare a hot meal and place each plate on the table. “Breakfast is ready!”
“No thanks Mom, I’ll just have cereal,” replied Keith.
“Don’t have time to eat” yelled Kathleen, “I have to get ready!”
As Kevin reached for the last few morsels of Applejacks, I hear my name again echoed from upstairs, “Mom, it’s not fair!”
I devour one large plate of scrambled eggs while I quickly pack five lunches, keeping an eye on the time. My teenagers finally reappear from the shower and make a slightly moist exit for the door. According to the latest peer group, warm hats and gloves are strictly forbidden in frigid weather as frostbite is “in” this year. Tennis shoes are also more appropriate for maneuvering through high snowdrifts. I wave goodbye to my boys as I check my supply of aspirin.
Focusing my attention on my two daughters, I discover one is still in the bathtub and the other is finishing her homework. With a mere fifteen minutes before the bus arrives, I take a deep breath…SCREAM…and begin to look for milk money in the deep caverns of my purse. They finally sprint out the door and parade down the driveway to await their carriage.
“Ahhh,” as I reach for a cup of tea, “four down, one to go!”
Just then, the front door flies open and a frantic Kathleen dashes to the bathroom, as I watch the familiar yellow shadow vanish from sight. Next adventure, I shatter the ice on my FROZEN car, and chauffeur my distraught daughter to school along with her pajama-clad little brother.
“I’m hungry Mommy,” sighs Kurt as he takes off his coat. “What’s to eat?”
Glancing at four plates of cold scrambled eggs, I pop one in the microwave and serve it to my enthusiastic five-year-old.
“What a wonderful age…so cooperative and happy.”
Kurt then slips into his G.I. Joe boots, gloves, and hat. I give him a reassuring hug and watch him skip down the driveway to meet the bus. He scales up three mountainous steps and turns back with an angelic smile, as if to thank me for all I have done. My hectic morning disappears along with that big yellow school bus.
