He looked along the rows at the masses of people sitting on the hillside. As the men with baskets were going along everyone was taking something to eat, but still there was enough. In fact more than enough!
The funny thing was that it was Benjamin’s lunch they were eating. He had only brought lunch for one person, five small loaves of bread and two small fish, so what had happened now that there was plenty for everyone?
Benjamin remembered the smell of freshly baked bread as he got up that morning. His mother must be the best baker in town.
“I’m going to hang around with Jesus today,” he told his mother at breakfast, “I’ll need some lunch because I won’t be home till late.” He packed five little loaves and two small fish and ran out the door. He loved these long hot summers when he was free of synagogue school, and could play with his friends by the side of the lake.
Lately that teacher from Nazareth had been around a fair bit, and wherever he went, the crowds seemed to gather and follow him. Today when Benjamin met up with his friends they joined the crowds and listened as the teacher talked about God and told wonderful stories.
Late in the day, just as Benjamin thought he should be getting home, someone was calling to see if anyone had any food. Surprised, Benjamin realised that he still had his lunch in his bag. He had been so busy listening to Jesus he had forgotten to eat!
“Here, it’s not much but you can have mine if you want,” he said to one of the teacher’s helpers. They took it away and he watched as Jesus held it up to the sky and said some words he couldn’t hear. Then they started handing it out, and here it was, it even came along to where he and his friends were sitting. Benjamin took some of his mother’s bread and a piece of fish. It was delicious. It was a funny feeling watching other people eating the same food and knowing it had come from his house.
“Jesus blessed it, and thanked God for it and now there is enough for everyone,” people around him were saying in wonder. They weren’t hungry any more, but were satisfied, and now were preparing to go home.
Jesus’ helpers began picking up all the left over broken pieces and Benjamin and his friends helped. When they were finished they counted twelve baskets full.
“Come on,” shouted Benjamin. “I can’t wait to tell Mum what happened, that when I gave my lunch to Jesus he fed everybody and had so much extra left over as well.”
