“Let me take an example from everyday life,” wrote Paul in Galatians 3:15. He went on to discuss God’s covenant with Abraham and the difference between the Law and the Promise. “You are all one in Christ Jesus,” he wrote, “and heirs according to the promise.”
Jesus was a master at taking things from everyday life and using them as examples to show deep eternal truths in a way the people could understand. He could point to farmers planting their seed; show the disciples a fig tree; place his hand on the head of a child; or talk about such things as lamp stands, bread, or water. These were all everyday things that the people could relate to. His message would stay with them long after he had returned to heaven. Every time they lit a lamp, or drew water from the well they would be reminded of his words.
He could illustrate God’s love and the power of forgiveness by talking about lost things: a coin, a sheep and a beloved son. You are lost to me and I miss you, he was telling them. I am going to search for you until I find you, and when you come back to me I will run to you and hug you and we’ll have a big party.
So what can I find nearby that I can use to point people to God? Perhaps my garden where I can talk about seeds which transform into beautiful flowers – a miracle and also a picture of resurrection. Perhaps I can talk about the trees by broken banks with roots exposed. The Bible has a lot to say about roots, and the importance of being rooted deeply in God and his word.
Perhaps as I make my neighbour a cuppa I can talk about the nourishment brought by life in Christ. When I take a meal to a new mother we can discuss the miracle of a new life, appreciation of a gift, and the importance of the greatest gift of all time – salvation through Jesus Christ.
The days and the nights, seasons of the year and the cycles of life, everything in creation around me is bursting with a spiritual application. It is one thing for me to see it for myself, but quite another to share it with someone who doesn’t yet know Christ.
Give me eyes, Lord, to see your wonders in creation. Give me wisdom and boldness to share with my friends and neighbours your great love displayed so extravagantly in every day life.
