We also have several pastors in the area who have agreed to be available for those families that do not have a church connection of their own. I greatly appreciate these pastors and their ministry to our clients.
Eternal Rest was founded by my father seventy years ago. He headed the business for fifty years before his death twenty years ago. I have been guiding the business since his death. We have become the largest mortuary in our town, averaging about 3.8 funerals per week. That is a very good business in our industry.
However, I was talking recently with one of the pastors who does services for us, and he was of the opinion that our name, Eternal Rest, might be promoting a false hope to families of those who were not properly prepared for eternity when they passed into it.
I do not want to promote false hopes; I have always prided myself on our people being honest with our families in every detail of our relationship with them. I inquired further of this pastor. He said that there were two “destinations” possible for our clients. One is Heaven, which really is an eternal rest as described in the Bible. The other is Hell, which, although it is eternal, provides no rest for its inhabitants. He said each of our clients came to us having already established their eternal destination. Every family we serviced was standing on the edge of eternity.
I asked him why some went to Heaven and others went to Hell. He said the difference was whether or not the person had a faith relationship with Jesus Christ. Those who confessed their sins and accepted Jesus’ payment for their sin, by faith, went to Heaven. Those who refused, or neglected to do this, went to Hell.
I thought about the many clients whom we had serviced over the past seventy years. I figured we had more than 10,000 clients during that time. And I wondered how many of them were now enjoying the eternal rest of Heaven, and how many of them were suffering the torments of Hell. I didn’t know. But I was fairly certain that many were in each of these possible destinations.
So, I have proposed a name change for our business. In fact, my lawyer is working on the legal arrangements to make the change. I have also been thinking seriously about my own eternal rest. One day I will be the client, not the mortician, and I want to know where I will be going when that happens. I have made an appointment with the pastor who shared this with me so I can learn more about what is coming in eternity and how I can be prepared for it in Christ.
Effective as soon as my lawyers give me the okay, our name will be changed to remind our families that eternal rest is not guaranteed to all who pass from this world. I intend to ask my pastor friend to write a pamphlet for us explaining our new name. I want to give a copy to every family we serve in the future.
Our new name will be Eternity’s Edge Mortuary.
