Life had it’s challenges since her husband had lost his job. Fortunately just as the unemployment was about to run out he had found some work as a night shift forklift operator. It didn't exactly pay their bills but she knew it was better than nothing. They were deeply in debt with all of their savings depleted. The family was starting over. As difficult as things had become, Jane was thankful that she didn't have to go it alone. Her husband was a man of faith who worked long and hard without complaining. Jane no longer had the privilege of being a stay at home mom. She had managed to find two part time jobs. In the morning she worked in the bakery of the local supermarket. Bringing home “day olds” was a welcome benefit and Jane was glad to be able to provide for her family. In the afternoons she worked in the school cafeteria serving lunch to the students and happy to see her children during the day. It was tiring and she missed her “old life” but she was glad to contribute to the family finances. Cook, clean, work, pray and do it all over again, this is the life Jane now came to know.
Setting her bible aside and opening her eyes, Jane started to wish that she had never sat down at all when she found it even harder to stand back up again. Her knees creaked as she slowly began to raise herself up. She stopped midway with her hands on her low back. A dull ache served as a squeezing reminder of the work she had to endure that day. The familiar sound of a house key turning in the lock let her know that her husband had arrived home. It was time for the changing of the guard. As hard as it was they were both glad that their prayers for work had been answered. God had provided jobs that allowed them to take turns being at home with the children. They had also found that there was a bit of time to spare each morning for the married couple to have some time together before going their separate ways.
“Better days are coming” Jane’s husband would say with a hug time and time again. He had such a hope for their future. Jane wanted to believe that too, but thought that it sure would be helpful if she just wasn't so tired. Rest seemed to be all she ever craved and it was rest that evaded her night after night. If she were honest with herself she would admit that she was more tired from worry than from her labor. She wanted to believe that things would together for good but had her moments of doubt. On this particular morning Jane found herself feeling discouraged.
“I’m just so tired.” Jane confided.
“Jane I know you love to read about the Proverbs 31 woman. I also know that there are days when you don’t think you can live up to those high expectations. Rest assured that you are a wife of noble character. Do not become weary in doing good Janie, we’re going to reap our harvest soon, you’ll see.”
That night as Jane closed her eyes she found that sleep came easily. With the kind and understanding words from her husband, God’s words, Jane found that the rest that she sought was there all along. Life was hard, but God is good, rest assured, He will provide as he promised that those who are weary may come to Him and He will give them rest.
