Topic: Fragrance (10/24/05)
Just as a fragrance carries an object’s essence with very little substance, so a haiku conveys the essence of its subject with very few words. The following haiku are little whiffs only of scriptures—perhaps they will be tantalizing enough to send their readers in search of the source of each aroma.

Lentils
Take a whiff, Esau.
Like it? Let’s trade. Your blessing
For a bowl of stew.

Passover
This home smells of bread,
Bitter herbs, the blood of lambs.
O angel, pass by!

Proverb
As incense fills a
Room, so my soul contains joy.
Your friendship—my heart.

Beloved
How fragrant you are!
How pleasing, how beautiful!
You are cherished, love.

Mary’s Song
I nuzzle your neck,
My precious babe, my Jesus—
God, who smells like me.

At Cana
Fabulous bouquet:
The best wine at this wedding—
Quite a miracle!

Mountain Sermon
Look at these lilies.
Their aroma, their clothing:
You are far more dear.

Jesus’ Gift
Your tears are sweeter
Than this expensive perfume
Mary, my precious!

Calvary
Hewn cedar—the scent
So rich—corrupted now by
Nails, vinegar, blood.

Witness
The fragrance of Christ
I should be—do I make them
Wrinkle their noses?

Oohh, definitely some 'tantalizing tidbits' here. Have only recently heard of haiku and your examples rival any I've seen. You have managed to paint some incredibly beautiful word pictures - especially liked the Calvary haiku. Well done.
