Experiments are supposedly a controlled little science to prove a point or to test something, but sometimes with an alarming hiss and a fizz of green the experiment spirals into an experience that doesn’t match the text book, or the recipe book for that matter.
My cooking never turns out like the picture on the front of the glossy magazine; the lid falls off the spice jar and wow, we have an explosive little pot of curry, or the banana cake that supposedly rises to ten centimetres comes out a mere 2. Come to think of it, life doesn’t much look like the picture on the front of a magazine, glossy or not.
Especially if you decide to throw the exciting ingredient of hearing from God into the chemistry of life; a dash of destiny and the divine to equal amounts of experience and trials. The pot hisses, it bubbles, with a spurt it fizzes madly out of the top, hopefully with a pleasant aroma.
Hearing from God can be as simple as just expecting to hear from Him.
The Bible has many instances where God speaks to the characters, such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Jesus, Paul and others.
He speaks to us through His Word, through individual Scripture verses that speak directly to our situation, through Scripture in a Song that we can sing in our situation, through a reference in a greeting card.
Through impressions that He lays on our spirit; such as an urge to give money to a certain person or charity, a nudge to pray for someone or call someone, a deep desire God has planted that will not leave, a quiet voice in the very depth of our being.
Peace. If it is God’s will for us to a certain thing or go somewhere, His overwhelming peace will be our guide. My Dad always said, “No peace, no go.”
Of course God can speak to us in many other ways that He so chooses. He longs to stir up the pot of our life, add some cool ingredients and watch the fizzle. While it may feel rather experimental and out of control to us, rest assured, an experiment is a test and trial in a controlled environment, which is right where we are; in the Hand of God.
