But I’m not actually talking about modern day slavery here. I definitely want to see modern day slavery end, but I am talking about fighting for the rights of a group of oppressed people the world seems to have forgotten. I believe this group has even more in common with slavery of old (like the slavery of the African Americans years ago) than modern day slavery does.
Modern day slavery is different from slavery of old in one key area. Modern day slavery is ILLEGAL, slavery of old was LEGAL. Why is that important? Because the belief behind slavery of old was that a certain group of people were less than human and, therefore, had no rights. That allowed whole cultures of people to participate in slavery without feeling guilty because the law had declared it wasn’t wrong. This is not so with modern day slavery. The world cries out for it to end because the world acknowledges that it is WRONG. No human should be OWNED by another human. We are all created equal, all the same before God, and all should be valued.
There is currently a group of people in this world, though, who are deemed less than human, and given no rights-not even the right to life-and it is LEGAL. This group of people is the preborn. “What? You are not an abolitionist,” you say. “You’re a pro-lifer.” I disagree with you. I am an abolitionist because I am pro-life.
Here’s the cold, hard truth. Are you ready for it? Are you a parent? Aunt? Uncle? Grandparent? Look at that child in your life. I’m looking at my 3 year old daughter right now. At 3 years of age she is the same person she was at 6 weeks in the womb. If she would have been aborted at 6 weeks in the womb (or earlier, or later) it is this little girl I am looking at right now that would have been lost and nothing less. Look at your child, your niece or nephew, your grandchild, it is that child abortion would have ended and it is children, people, humans, just like them that abortion ends every day, and it is LEGAL.
I am committed to fight for the preborn because they ARE human and so am I. In fighting for their value as human beings I am fighting for my own value, and that of my children and my grandchildren. We all begin the same.
I am inspired by people like Rev. John Rankin and William Wilberforce who stood up to a culture that declared oppression legal and said, “WRONG!” People like Dietrich Bonhoeffer who, during the Nazi reign, stood up to a passive, scared, silent, and apathetic Church and cried, “WRONG!” Because at the end of the day I believe all men ARE created equal, the word “created” inferring that all men are equal from the moment they are created, the moment of conception.
Earlier I mentioned that Jesus Christ was an abolitionist. When Jesus sets a person free he does more than set their body free, He sets their soul free, and that soul is free in this life and the next, for all eternity. No man or other power can do that, and no man or other power can stop it. That is the miracle of the Gospel-the power of Jesus Christ to set a soul free from the bondage of sin and death, a bondage every soul is born into since Adam and Eve’s fall in the Garden. If you are someone who has chosen abortion and lives under the weight of that sin, beaten down by its cruel judgment and condemnation, Jesus Christ is the Great Liberator! Through His death and resurrection, the sin of abortion was paid for, the death it brings defeated. By accepting His payment for your sin, you can be slave turned abolitionist. You can know freedom and take freedom to others.
I want to see sex slavery end, domestic slavery end, sweat shops closed, and people set free to be people, not commodities. But I will not rest until the preborn are given back the all-important title they were stripped of… “human.”
